Resignation Letter

For those who don't know, I have been Athletic Director for my childrens Catholic Junior High school for the past five years. I recently have resigned and want to share the letter I sent out to the principals and priest.

October 3, 2012

It is with a heavy heart that I announce my resignation from the position as Athletic Director for Newark Catholic’s Junior High Schools effective at the end of the 2012-2013 sports season.

It has been my great pleasure to work with you all, and serve the kids in this role for the past five years. Sports play a huge role in the lives of children today and are a very positive component of their lives. It is important for them to be involved in sports. I have said it before; the life lessons that come from being a part of a competitive sports team are lessons that are not easily obtained any place else. Sports help to build character, integrity, work ethic, accountability, teamwork, and teach the kids how to manage desire and determination. It also equips them with the understanding, knowing the importance, and gaining experience in the hard work that is required in achieving a goal, facing an obstacle, and defying the odds.

When we take all of this into consideration, and add in the two most important parts; that we are a school built around a strong Catholic faith, and a school with a fantastic academic program, the kids at St. Francis and Blessed Sacrament are getting more and learning more about themselves in these precious years of their lives than kids from other area schools. It is important to recognize that although faith and school are the two most important pieces to this puzzle, being involved with sports, especially in our schools, only strengthens our kid’s commitment to faith, family, and school. Faith, academics, and sports at our schools are a three legged stool for our kids to sit; the three of these pieces should be embraced and supported equally by all.

I will still be around supporting the kids in every way possible. My plan is to get a new AD hired during basketball season to start to show them the ropes; however they won’t be officially AD until July 2013. I will also do my best to make sure all coaching vacancies are filled before I leave.

I will post for this spot in both bulletins and the advocate initially. I will make sure the new AD has all the contacts available, understands all the requirements needed to coach, our rules of Wednesday and Sunday practices, and the countless other duties that come with the job. I will make sure that the JH athletic department, and new AD is set up for success when I leave.

Thank you all for your insight, confidence, support, and trust in me over the past few years. I hope you all can look back and say that I served the kids well and made a positive impact on them and the school in my years as AD.

Respectfully,

Letter To Ashford Administration: Use Same Guidelines

Dear Ashford University administration:

There is concern that all classes are not setting the same guidelines as another. There are Instructors whom use different grading techniques than another. This has created confusion with the students.

Needs Assessment

·         APA formatting has been graded differently

·         Writing styles have been different among Instructor

·         Some Instructors will allow make up work while others do not

·         Not all Instructors give guidance when needed

·         Some Instructors provide examples of the writing assignments which is helpful

·         Some Instructors will not answer emails until after an assignment has been turned in

Proposed Plan

Based on the needs listed above, the University should reassess the guidelines and achieve new goals so that each Instructor is using the same guidelines for fairness to all students.

Course Outline

·         Achieving that same writing styles apply the same amongst Instructors

·         Achieving that APA formatting is used in accordance with APA guidelines and all Instructors follow these guidelines

·         Allow make up work if students need to make up extra points

·         Attach an example of the written assignment that the Instructor is wanting to ensure that student understands the assignment

·         Answer emails in a timely manner to ensure that student does not have questions regarding assignment before assignment is due

Classroom Format

This will be done by holding weekly meetings. There will also be the opportunity to train at home. Remain flexible so that if another need arises we can respond.

Limitations

These guidelines should be taken care of as soon as possible in order for students to be fairly graded and so that they will appreciate that you have taken the time to achieve the goals that were set.

If you have any questions, comments or concerns, please feel free to contact me.

A Good Blog

What exactly is a blog? A blog can be defined as an online journal that is updated frequently, and at times, daily. The journal entry or otherwise known as post can be a couple of sentences to a long three page post. A blog shares topical information with other internet users. Blogs are a great way to strike up conversation or keep others updated on specific topics. Blogs have become so popular in the world that we live in today and it is growing even larger. Creating a blog to publish can be quite difficult or quite easy if you educate yourself on the needs of the blog. A number one concern for any blog creator should be how to build a blog spot that will create a high number of guest traffic. Developing a writing style and tone appropriate to your subject material, posting often, and allow your readers the ability to comment on your posts will surely gain a large number of blog guest.

A blog’s design can have a huge impact on the perception of the readers that visit you blog and design of your blog should be one of your biggest considerations when developing your blog. Having a clean, reader-friendly design that is structured to accomplish your goals is, next to having excellent content, one of the best things you can do to help your blog succeed. One big detail to consider when creating your blog is to choose the right logo for your site; you will want to create something that will be memorable to your readers to get them to want to revisit your site. Your logo is considered to be the face of your blog spot. Creating a theme for your website is another important piece of your blog. Your theme should go along with your logo; match it up to create the best look for your blog space as possible. Many people do not put much thought or creativity into the look of their blog, however, this detail is ever so important when creating any blog, as you want your readers to always come back. With the right background content and atmosphere your readers are sure to revisit your site. You should choose a design that pertains to your audience and the impression in which you would like to present to them.

A couple important of questions to ask yourself when creating your blog are ‘what will you feature within your blog’ and ‘what content will there be for your viewers and followers to read’. Decide who your audience will be and then create categories that will entice your readers to want to read more into your blog. Once you have determined your audience the writing will become much easier. You will create post after post and hopefully obtain many comments from your readers to strike up many, many conversations. Something that you might want to consider when designing your blog is to make it very easy to “join your blog”. Always do a good job of promoting your feed. Do not hide your RSS in the footer or the sidebar; put it in plain sight for all viewers to see. To have a successful blog you will want to collect many followers. Next, always remember to be grammatically correct in your writings and to not use slang language; after all, that is the reason that your followers view your blog, to read it. Be sure to always stay on top of your grammar school teachings as you do not want to come across as illiterate or uneducated. Viewers can be quite critical and they really will expect good readability and typography.

Another key step in creating a great blog is to personalize your website. From the moment a person enters your blog, you blog should say, ‘this site has been created by me and me alone’; show them who is behind the site! In creating your profile, the inclusion of a picture, if not of yourself then include a picture that let’s your personality shine through may not be a bad idea. However it is ok to not do this as in these days you cannot be too careful; including too much personal information can surely put you, unnecessarily, in harm’s way. Steer clear of presenting too much information about yourself to avoid the dangers that can arise such as your address, place of employment, or places that you frequently go to. Next, you must have efficient navigation; you should never make your followers work hard to figure out what they are looking for as you may lose many followers or viewers if this step is not done properly. People are so busy these days and don’t want everything in their life to be complicated so do not make them regret viewing your blog. Organize your blog to the best of your ability to create a clear and concise environment for your viewers.

Create an interesting footer for your blog as it is not just the end of the page but it can be made out to be one of the most important areas of the blog. A viewer may be leaving the blog and as they look at the footer they may see something interesting. This can direct the viewer back to the top of the page because you have included something in the footer that they may have forgotten to look at. This will make them go back up to see what they have missed. If you include impressive graphics and good content then you are have been successful in creating a great footer. Remember that design is always evolving while you create and maintain your blog; it is a process of continual enhancement and improvement. Don’t expect to ever be completely ‘done’ with a blog design, because it should never be completely ‘done’. Instead, enjoy the process of continually improving – and keep working to make your blog as effective and efficient as it can be.

These are a few suggestions, ideas, and rules to follow that should surely get you started in creating a blog that is either professional or personal. Educate yourself before going out there and just blindly creating your blog to gain insight and perspective. See exactly what is trending now and get creative and really make your blog spot shine. If you visit other blogs, I’m sure you will see some nice blog designs that catch your eyes. Take notes and apply to your blog the thing that you liked about other blogs and stay away from the things that you didn’t like and other blogs. Visit other blogs, ask friends and coworkers about any experiences that they may have had with blogging. And remember the most important thing about blogging; be yourself and have fun with it.

Delivering Bad News

Delivering bad news can be very difficult task for management to carry out depending on the circumstance. The right approach is very important when considering how you must deliver the news. The first step would be to collect all the facts of the situation. As manager, I would create a file of some sort for all of my employees where I can document all of my employee’s praises and complaints. In this case, I would pull all of the complaints from co-workers and customers go over it all to try to pinpoint any consistencies in the complaints, and prepare to present this information in chronological order. After this has been done, I would schedule a meeting with the employee who has been performing at a substandard level; the meeting would be someplace private like a conference room with a simple reason for calling the meeting like a performance review meeting which would be accurate.

Once in the meeting, I would ask the employee how everything is going for them and ask if they had anything that they wanted to discuss, to get an idea if they have any issues themselves and to feel the employee out. At this point I would produce all information in the employee’s shield or file that has been collected. This information would include all of the confrontational moments that the employee has been involved in over their past two years of employment. After I had gone over all of the complaints I would give the employee their fair time to explain what is going on, moreover, would go over each individual case one at a time.  It is very important to handle the situation with care and concern for the employee, customers, and the rest of the team. It is equally as important to be honest with the employee and work to a resolution.

Delivering bad news is not often easy; yet it is something that needs to be handled right away, especially when it concerns work performance. Bad performance is a bad habit that a person can develop bad habits are tough to break. Instead of only delivering bad news, bring a few positive items to the meeting. Tell the employee what they done with their performance that has been positive or good, even if it is something on a committee. This conflict resolution technique is a very tactful way to handle any situation. This technique can be used on a football field while coaching, a classroom while teaching, or as a manager delivering bad news. The purpose of this conflict resolution technique is to not completely tear the employee down, rather, to show them that they are capable of good things. I feel that a person needs to receive a bit of positive feedback whenever they receive bad news; it is very important to produce the good and the bad together, and it will make it easier to deliver as well.

The next thing to deal with is the employee’s response to the feedback that has been given. I would expect that maybe the noticed behavior by the management and the other team members has possibly been un-noticed by the employee in question. Is the business a busy business; has the behavior of the employee been overlooked by the employee who has been behaving badly? It can be easy to become busy at work and not notice the behavior that you have been capable of; definitely not an excuse. I would assume that the employee in question would definitely be remorseful for their actions, if they indeed were unaware of their behavior. If the employee values their job at all then the need to improve their job performance should relevant. If this person indeed wants to keep their job, they will need to do some serious maintenance in this area to improve upon their work performance and save their job. Finally, I would also schedule a follow up meeting with the employee, with an exact date where I could review the employee’s performance to determine if the employee has improved and met their new goals

Wedding!!!

Good Sunday morning. Last night my oldest nephew got married. It was a very nice ceremony which took place out in the country (they are both country people) near an old, antique looking barn. It was very unique and absolutely the both of the them. I don't have great photo's yet but here is one I snatched from my phone.
